Barbershop Cut and Shave Christchurch
The full-on traditional barber experience to get you looking and feeling fresh
Man Up Barbershop are stalwarts about a good old fashioned cut and shave. That shave is indicative of the early role of a barber, and the traditional red and white striped barber pole is still seen today. But not many know its origins. Here’s a quick lesson, because to know your barber, it’s also cool to know the history behind one of the oldest professions in the world.
Way back in the 12th century, barbers were respected individuals whose tasks included performing surgery, blood-letting, and dentistry – as well as trimming hair and shaving beards. The barber pole was representative of these services (the red being blood).
In the 19th century, barbershops had developed into places where men could feel comfortable – just like today; a social spot where connections are made, and a yarn and joke appreciated.
The barbershop was the community hub in town, though hairstyles no longer depict income or status.
From the 1920s to the ‘50s, a banker would have a different haircut to a labourer, and he could afford to see his barber every week for a trim and shave.

We like to welcome our clients in for a weekly spruce up too. Some of you are regulars, and we can understand why. A cut and shave at Man Up Barbershop feels good and looks sleek. We’ve already talked about the benefits of a nice haircut. Let’s talk you through the process of a good shave.
We begin with warm shaving cream, worked into a lather. We explore the contours of your face, add a spritz of aftershave or essential oil, and then comes the hot towel.
We place the towel, folded in half, directly under your nose. The edges are folded up to cover your cheeks and eyes, leaving only your nose exposed. You can now relax for somewhere between three to five minutes. Then another lather and hot towel.
Time to shave. BTW: a barber student must complete 30 shaves to graduate. Our team have been doing it for decades. Relax.
We map out the 14 distinct areas of your face; each requires a different one of the four basic shaving strokes: freehand, backhand, reverse freehand and reverse backhand.
Hot towel, astringent, cold towel.
A crisp, clean aftershave – probably one of our gorgeous Triumph & Disaster products – finishes the experience. You’ll feel incredible.
